Generally, when the journey is of short distance, people travel only by taking general ticket. But there is also a rule of the Railways regarding the General Ticket, about which even the people who travel daily do not know.
Actually, we are telling about this rule because many times people have to pay a fine even after getting a ticket after being caught by the TTE. This rule is about the validity of general ticket. The validity of the general ticket is only for a few hours and if someone boards the train after that time, he may have to pay a fine.

As per the rules of Indian Railways, if you have to travel up to 199 kms, then you have to catch the train within 3 hours of purchasing a general ticket. On the other hand, if the journey is of 200 kilometers or more, then general ticket can be taken 3 days in advance. If a passenger takes a ticket for a journey of less than 199 kms, he has to start the journey till the departure of the first train to the station where he has to go or 3 hours after the date of purchase of the ticket.

Railways had fixed this deadline for general tickets in the year 2016. Therefore, now if any passenger on a ticket purchased for a journey up to 199 kms is found traveling after three hours of purchasing the ticket, he is treated as without ticket and fined. If you do not start the journey within 3 hours, you can neither cancel the ticket nor travel on it by any other train.
That’s why this rule had to be made
Some people used to travel on unreserved tickets throughout the day. To stop this gimmick, the Railways has set a deadline for starting the journey. Tickets were being misused because of the no time limit rule. In Delhi and its surrounding areas, a whole gang was taking wrong advantage of it. As soon as the journey of the passengers was over, these people used to take tickets from them and sell them cheaply to other passengers. In this way, the railway was facing a lot of economic loss. That’s why the Railways made this rule to stop this trickery.
