The results of the Gujarat assembly elections are out. This time the Bharatiya Janata Party has created a new record. In Gujarat, which has 182 assembly seats, 156 BJP candidates won the elections. The Congress suffered the most. The Congress came straight down to 17 from 77 seats. Means Congress had to bear the loss of 60 seats. At the same time, this time only five candidates of the Aam Aadmi Party, which claimed to form the government, could win the elections. Four seats went to the accounts of others.
In the 2022 Gujarat Assembly elections, the Deodar seat in Banaskantha district was crucial for both the BJP and the Congress as it has been a contest between the two in the last five elections held before this. The BJP, which was defeated in the last election, fielded Keshaji Shivaji Chauhan this time. Chouhan defeated Shivabhai Bhuria of INC by 38,414 votes.
Elections were held on this seat for the first time in 1962. The BJP, which was defeated in the last election, fielded Keshaji Shivaji Chauhan for the third time in a row. The party had won here for the first time in 1995.
BJP was defeated here in 2017 due to NOTA
The Congress had won this seat in the 2017 assembly elections. In this election Congress had given ticket to Shivabhai Bhuria. Bhuria defeated BJP’s Keshaji Shivaji Chauhan by just 972 votes. While NOTA, which was at number three, got 2,988 votes.
Prior to 2017, the BJP had won this seat in the 2012 elections as well. In that election, Keshaji Shivaji Chauhan, who contested from the BJP, defeated Goabhai Ravari of the Congress.
Congress had bet on the sitting MLA
Congress had made sitting MLA Shivabhai Bhuria its candidate for this seat for the 2022 elections. Whereas, BJP had declared Keshaji Shivaji Chauhan (Thakor) as its candidate. The Aam Aadmi Party had fielded Bhimabhai Chowdhary. Polling on this seat was held in the second phase on December 5. The results came on 8 December.
In 2017, Congress got an edge in Banaskatha district.
Deodar seat is one of the nine assembly seats in Banaskantha district. In 2017, the Congress had won five of the nine seats in the district. Whereas, BJP was successful in winning three seats. Whereas, Independent Jignesh Mevani won from Vadgam seat.
What are the election dates?
In the first phase, elections are to be held on 89 seats. The notification for the first phase has been issued on November 5. Nominations open till 14th November. Scrutiny of nomination papers took place till November 15 and withdrawal of nominations till November 17. There, the election will be held on December 1.
Similarly, elections are to be held on 93 seats in the second phase. Notification for this has been issued on 10 November. Nominations were filed till 17 November. Scrutiny of nomination papers took place on November 18 and withdrawal of nominations till November 20. Votes will be cast for the second phase on December 5. The election results will come on December 8.
