Renouncing Citizenship: There are increasing incidents of people living in Gujarat giving up Indian citizenship and settling abroad. The number of people surrendering their passports has doubled in a year. Since January 2021, 1187 people have given up their Indian citizenship. According to a Times of India report, a man named Utpal Patel left Ahmedabad in 2011. He went to study in Northern Canada and by 2022 Utpal took Canadian citizenship and surrendered his Indian passport by 2023. This kind of trend has been seen increasing among Gujaratis.
Gujaratis leaving India and settling abroad
According to the data of the local passport office, people are surrendering their passports in the areas of Surat, Navsari, Valsad and Narmada including South Gujarat. In May 2024, this figure has reached 244. Officials have noticed that the people who have surrendered their passports are between 30 and 45 years of age. Most of these people are settled in America, Britain, Canada and Australia.
Parliament data also gives strength
Parliamentary figures seem to support this, according to which, between 2014 and 2022, 22 thousand 300 people of Gujarat have renounced their citizenship. Gujarat comes third after Delhi’s 60 thousand 414 and Punjab’s 28 thousand 117 people. Especially after the Covid period, there was a big increase in this.
An official, without disclosing his name, said that most of the youth go abroad for the purpose of studies and later settle there. At the same time, passport advisor Ritesh Desai said that it is expected that by 2028, the number of people handing over passports will increase substantially because people who have reached abroad are getting citizenship there.
