Vaijayanti Mala was born on 13 August 1933 in Madras (now Chennai) in a Tamil Brahmin family. Her father Mandyam Dhathi Raman and mother Vasundhara Devi both belonged to Tamil families. Vaijayanti Mala married Chamanlal Bali in 1968, with whom she has a son Suchindra Bali. Her husband died in 1986 and since then Vaijayanti Mala has raised the child alone.

Vaijayanti Mala learned many classical dances like Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi. Vaijayanti Mala, who debuted in the Tamil film Vazhakai in 1949, worked in many Tamil and Telugu films.
