Haryana Elections Result Congress reaction on Result questioned on EVM Elections Commission Answered

Haryana Elections Result: The Election Commission on Tuesday rejected the claims made by Congress leaders about alleged tampering of EVMs in some seats of Haryana. Congress leaders had claimed that the different results were due to the different state of battery charge in the EVM machines.

Congress leaders have claimed that complaints regarding EVMs have come from Hisar, Mahendragarh and Panipat districts. He says that in the EVMs whose batteries were 99 percent charged, Congress candidates have lost, but in those whose batteries were 60-70 percent charged, Congress has won. Election Commission sources have responded to this.

Jairam Ramesh raised questions

Party general secretary Jairam Ramesh said on Tuesday, “Have you understood this conspiracy? Where there is 99 percent battery, BJP wins and where there is 60-70 percent battery, Congress wins. If this is not a conspiracy then what is it?

New batteries are inserted in the presence of the candidates

Commission sources said that alkaline batteries are used in the control unit of EVM. He told that on the day of launch of EVM, new batteries are inserted in the control unit in the presence of the candidates and they are sealed. Initially the battery gives voltage between 7.5 to 8 volts hence, when the voltage is above 7.4, the battery capacity appears to be 99 percent. With the use of EVM, its battery capacity and hence the voltage gets reduced.

Control unit works when there is this much voltage

Sources said that when the voltage goes below 7.4, the battery capacity shows from 98 percent to 10 percent. He told that the control unit works as long as the voltage in the battery is more than 5.8 volts. This happens when the battery capacity remains more than 10 percent and a warning to replace the battery appears on the control unit display. This is similar to the signal that appears in a vehicle when the engine is running on very little fuel left.

Sources said that the remaining capacity of the battery on the day of counting depends on the ‘mock voting’ conducted at the control unit, the actual voting and the initial voltage of the battery (8 to 7.5 volts). He said that generally, alkaline batteries have the property of regaining voltage to some extent when kept ‘switched off’.
