Despite being afraid of heights, a professional roller coaster rider who makes millions by travelling the world and vlogging his adventures on YouTube is said to be “living the dream”. Sean Evans turned his fear into a passion. But before that, he was terrified of heights as a child and still hasn’t fully overcome it.
Evans, a 33-year-old content creator from Stoke-on-Trent, has been afraid of heights since childhood, often being the first to close the curtains on airplanes during family holidays. During the pandemic, he found comfort in watching videos of theme parks and felt like he could escape. This inspired him to start a YouTube channel called Lift Hills and Thrills, with the aim of visiting theme parks and documenting his experiences.
Despite suffering from vertigo, which can trigger dizziness and migraines for 24 hours, Shaun decided to ride his first roller coaster since a school trip in May 2021. He set a park record by riding Nemesis at Alton Towers 64 times in six hours. According to Shaun, going on the ride did not make his condition “worse”. Since then he has visited about 50 theme parks and ridden about 130 roller coasters.

His YouTube channel has garnered over 7.2 million views. Recalling his time spent watching videos during lockdown, he explained how content about people “discovering the world” inspired him which turned into an obsession. He posted videos about Alton Towers’ reopening plans and new social distancing rules for theme parks during lockdown.
“I basically turned a hobby into a full-time job, and I get paid pretty well to travel and enjoy myself. When I’m writing about attractions or recording videos, it never feels like work,” he says.
