Most bacteria is found on the toilet seat. However, a new study has cautioned gym goers. This study states that equipment like dumbbells used in gyms have 362 times more bacteria than toilet seats.

The study showed that bacteria like gram-positive cocci can cause skin infections in gym goers. Antibiotic-resistant gram-negative rods were found on treadmills, exercise bikes and free weights. Specifically, free weights contain 362 times more bacteria than toilet seats, while treadmills contain 74 times more bacteria than public bathroom faucets.

What to do to reduce bacteria at the gym
In particular, to reduce exposure to bacteria, we recommend adopting proper hygiene practices, avoiding touching the face and washing hands thoroughly to protect machines and oneself from bacteria.
It is also advisable to change into gym clothes immediately after a workout for added protection. As far as workout bike and treadmill are concerned, which are the favorite equipments of every gym-aholic. This study found that exercise bikes and treadmills contained approximately 39 and 74 times more bacteria than public sinks and even cafeteria trays. In such a situation, caution is very important.
