double the risk of eczema

A study related to the effect of pollution on the skin in America’s Yale School of Medicine shows that people living in areas with high air pollution have double the risk of skin health related problem eczema. This research published in PLOS One examined the effect of pollution on more than 2 lakh people.

The results show that in places where PM 2.5 levels are high, people have double the risk of developing the skin disease eczema. PM 2.5 are tiny particles in the air emitted from vehicles, factories and fires, which are 30 times smaller than a human hair. Even 4.4% of the people included in this study had eczema. The author of the research said that this makes it clear that people who are in contact with particulate matter are more likely to have eczema.

Effect of air pollution on health

Air pollution has a huge impact on our health. Particulate matter present in the air not only damages people’s lungs but can also reach the blood circulation and cause serious health problems. Dr. Jeffrey Cohen and his team involved in the study found that an increase of just 10 micrograms per cubic meter of PMA 2.5 levels in the air more than doubles the chance of developing eczema. It became clear from this study that the air we breathe has a great impact on the health of the skin. The connection between industrial development and rising rates of eczema also highlights how air quality affects public health.
