Diabetes : If everything goes well, the day is not far when diabetes will no longer be an incurable disease. You will not have to worry about controlling it. Chinese scientists have done such a miracle. For the first time in the world, a patient’s diabetes has been cured by cell therapy.
This feat was achieved by a team from the Center for Excellence in Molecular Cell Science under Shanghai Changzheng Hospital and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Renji Hospital in Shanghai. The research was published in the journal Cell Discovery on April 30.
Treatment of diabetes for the first time
The patient whose diabetes has been cured is 59 years old and was suffering from type 2 diabetes for the last 25 years. He also underwent a kidney transplant in 2017. Most of his pancreatic islets were not functioning. The pancreas controls the blood glucose level. Due to which he had to take several insulin injections every day.
This is how the treatment happened
The patient underwent an innovative cell transplant in July 2021. After 11 weeks, he did not need external insulin. The medicine used to control blood glucose level was also gradually reduced and was completely stopped after a year. After the transplant, he was followed up, which showed that his pancreatic islet function was working properly. After about 33 months, the patient got rid of insulin.
Long running research
Insulin is needed to control blood sugar levels, which is done by the pancreas. When someone is affected by diabetes, this system fails to function. This does not allow enough insulin to be produced or it cannot be used properly.
Scientists around the world are researching islet transplant, an option to create islet-like cells from human stem cells. Now Chinese scientists have achieved great success in this. If everything goes well, the day is not far when treatment of diabetes will also become possible.
