Risk of dementia due to poor sleep

A new study published in the journal Neurology has linked poor sleep and dementia. It was found that 35.5% of participants who experienced excessive daytime sleepiness developed motor cognitive risk syndrome. In this study which lasted for about 3 years, 445 elderly people were known, whose average age was 76 years. Initially everything was fine but later a connection between sleep and dementia was found.

What does the study say?

Researchers found that people who reported poor sleep were more likely to have motor cognitive risk (MCR) than people with good sleep quality. However, this connection weakened when depression symptoms were added, suggesting that poor sleep alone may not be responsible for MCR when mental health is considered.

Many problems among those who sleep during the day

In the study, sleep quality was checked using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PHQI). Which included factors like sleeping time, worsening sleep cycle and being active during the day. Of these, only excessive daytime sleepiness and low excitement were associated with higher risk of MCR. Researchers have advised to avoid sleep during the day and focus on improving mental health. Because both things can cause dementia.
