Salt Intake by Age : Without salt the taste of food deteriorates. Both sodium and potassium are found in it, which are beneficial for health. Sodium helps in maintaining the right amount of water in the body and in delivering oxygen and other nutrients to all the organs. Due to this, there is energy in vascular health and nervous system. This does not mean that a lot of salt should be eaten.

There is a certain amount of salt, eating more than which can be harmful. WHO is also working on the target of reducing 30% salt in people’s food by 2030. The report claims that if this is not done in time, then in the coming seven years, about 70 lakh people may die due to diseases caused by salt. In such a situation, the question arises that how much salt should a person consume? Is there a different amount of salt to be consumed at every age?

How much salt is dangerous to eat?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), most of the people in the world consume more salt than required i.e. 10.8 grams per day, which is harmful for health. This increases the risk of various fatal diseases. Consuming too much salt can cause dangerous diseases like hair fall, swelling in kidneys, increased water retention, accumulation of water in the body, weakening of bones, heart disease, paralysis, high blood pressure and stroke.

How much salt should a healthy person consume?

According to dietitians and health experts, a healthy person should eat 5 grams i.e. one teaspoon of salt every day. One should not take more than 2.3 grams of sodium in a day, which is obtained from five grams of salt.

How much salt should be consumed at what age?

0-6 month old child- According to health experts, after 6 months children should not suddenly be given foods containing salt. Only minimal salt should be added to the child’s foods.

From 6 months to 1 year – After the age of 6 months, salt should be given gradually to children. It should be kept in mind that until the child is one year old, only one gram of salt should be fed.

From 1 to 3 years of age- According to health experts, two grams of salt can be given every day to children between 1 to 3 years of age.

From 4 to 10 years of age – When the child turns four years of age, his salt intake should be increased. Up to 3 grams of salt can be given to him till the age of 10 years.

Above 10 years of age – Health experts say that people above 10 years of age should eat 5 grams of salt every day. This can be more harmful than this.
