According to a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine on November 14, if Americans over 40 years of age had been as physically active as the top 25%, they could have lived 5 years longer. The study also estimates that if even the least active person does the same activities as the most active person, then his lifespan can increase by about 11 years. The risk of heart diseases and stroke increases in less physically active people. Due to which he may die before his age.

What does the study say?
Researchers studied how one can stay alive for longer periods by keeping oneself physically active. For this, data from the 2003-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for people over 40 was used, which was also linked to 2019 US population data and 2017 death records from the National Health Statistics Center. The study found that the total physical activity of the most active 25% of Americans over the age of 40 was equivalent to walking 4.8 km or 160 minutes every day.
From this, researchers estimated that Americans who were active like them could increase their lifespan by 5 years. If the least physically active 25% of the population remained as active as the most active 25%, i.e. walked 4.8 km i.e. 111 minutes every day, then their lifespan could have increased by 11 years.
