Amid the rapidly increasing cases of Hepatitis-A in the national capital Delhi for the last few weeks, doctors of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIMS) have asked people to avoid consuming contaminated food and contaminated water. Dr. Pramod Garg of AIMS told that most of the patients are children and youth in the age group of 18 to 25. He told that Hepatitis A and E spread mainly through feces and contaminated water. These are self-limited infections. That is, they do not spread from one person to another. At the same time, no specific anti-viral medicine is required for the treatment of patients suffering from this disease.
Dr. Garg said that a study conducted by the department has shown that both hepatitis A and E together are rapidly damaging the liver. They are the cause of 30 percent of liver cases.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), globally, 66 percent of the cases of viral hepatitis B and C are in 10 countries including India. At the same time, India ranks first among the countries with the highest number of viral hepatitis cases and about 12 percent of the world’s viral hepatitis cases are here. The WHO’s goal is to reduce new chronic hepatitis infections by 90 percent and viral hepatitis-related deaths by 65 percent by 2030.
While talking to the media, Dr. Garg further said that the National Viral Hepatitis Control Program in India is working towards this goal. He said that under this program, all newborn babies are vaccinated for hepatitis B at birth and medicines for the treatment of hepatitis B and C viruses are given free of cost.
