In many countries of the world including India, people eat non-vegetarian food. Countries in Asia and Europe are known for this. But in one country there is a very old tradition of eating pet dogs and cats. Here every year people eat 40 lakh cats. Have dinner with dog meat. There is a demand from all over the world to ban it, but apart from taking some steps for show, nothing happens.
We are talking about China. In view of the Corona epidemic, a few months ago a ban was imposed on eating dog and cat meat in Shenzhen city of China. This was the first city in China to do so. According to Humane Society International, every year 30 million dogs are killed for meat in Asian countries. In China alone, one crore dogs and 40 lakh cats are slaughtered every year in China. Most of these animals are pets, which are stolen and sold. Later they are kept in cages and then they are killed.
Dog Meat Festival is also celebrated
The tradition of eating dog meat goes back thousands of years in China, even though they are often kept as pets. Every year in June, the Dog Meat Festival is held in the city of Yulin in southern China, where live dogs and cats are sold exclusively for food. According to an estimate, 10,000 to 15,000 dogs are killed and eaten here. It is believed that eating dog meat in the summer months gives relief from the heat generated in the body. But during the last few years, organizations related to animal welfare have been protesting against it from time to time. There has been some reduction in this.
South Korea is not far behind
Dog meat dishes are so common in South Korea that they have their own name – gegogi. According to the Humane Society, there are an estimated 17,000 dog farms, where animals are routinely prepared for human consumption. Eating dogs and cats was common in Taiwan too, but in the past, the government imposed strict restrictions. Under the new Animal Protection Act, a fine of up to £6,500 has been made for selling, eating or buying animals there. Those found guilty of animal cruelty can face a hefty fine of £52,000 and two years in prison.
