If you are asked about dangerous animals, would you like to include cows in it? But surprisingly, campaigners have warned that cows are one of the most dangerous animals in Britain and should be avoided. The reason for this is clear, they claim that cattle, especially cows, trample pedestrians in a stampede and are now becoming like serial killers. It is also claimed that the actual number of deaths of 22 in around a thousand such incidents is much higher.

A group called Cows on Walkers Safety (COWS) is trying to raise awareness that cattle should be avoided in fields at all costs. Statistics show they are responsible for more deaths than dogs, claiming 22 lives in the last four years.

On its website Killer Cows, the group claims the government has vastly under-reported the threat. Campaigners believe there have been 889 incidents involving bovine animals since 2017. They fear the figure could be far lower than the truth. The group wants a central database of cattle attacks to be created.

David Clarke, of COWS, started the campaign after he was trampled by a crowd of 24 creatures in Yorkshire in 2014. “It was no small feat, they were Usain Bolt. They all ran over me and one ran over my dog,” he said. His dog, Merlin, died, while Clarke was rushed to hospital and had surgery for injuries to his liver.

The group wants the creatures to be fenced off or kept off public footpaths. “Even the slightest knock from a cow can cause people to be trampled or knocked down,” said Wayne Owen, from the Health and Safety Executive. The countryside code advises that if you feel threatened by cows, let go of the rope.
