China HMPV Virus: Nearly 5 years after the Covid-19 pandemic, China is facing a new health crisis. This time the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) virus has started spreading rapidly in China. Cases of this virus are being reported not only in China but also in neighboring countries. However, till now the World Health Organization (WHO) has not given any formal statement on the outbreak of this virus. In such a situation, many countries are advising their citizens to take precautions.
After some cases of HMPV virus were reported in Malaysia, the government has advised to take immediate precautions. According to a report in the Straits Times, the Health Ministry of Malaysia has instructed people to adopt measures to prevent this virus. The ministry has advised people to wash hands frequently with soap, wear a mask and cover the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
Avoid crowded areas
“People should take special precautions in crowded and closed areas, especially those traveling to high-risk countries,” the Malaysian Health Ministry said in a statement. These steps are mandatory.”
HMPV cases also reported in Hong Kong
Cases of HMPV have also been reported in China’s neighboring country Hong Kong. This virus mainly affects the respiratory system and its symptoms are like common cold. In severe cases, it can cause bronchitis or pneumonia. According to experts, it is a respiratory virus that causes upper and lower respiratory infections, which come with cold or flu-like symptoms. However, it can take a more serious form in children and the elderly.
Is HMPV virus a sign of a new pandemic?
HMPV virus is not a new virus. It was first discovered in 2001 and since then it has been seen several times in different areas. This virus is more active especially in the winter season. Although people of all ages can be affected by this virus, it can prove to be more dangerous for children and the elderly. Experts do not currently see it as a threat of an epidemic. But after the experience of COVID-19, the increasing cases of HMPV have raised the concern of governments and health officials.
