Circulation of oxygen is very important in all the parts of our body. If any organ stops getting oxygen, then the risk of its failure is highest. Blood does the work of delivering this oxygen and other essential nutrients to the rest of the body. In a way, it is an essential force of human life, which keeps flowing continuously.

Whenever we fall ill, the doctor first asks us to do a blood test, because a small drop of your blood can tell a lot about your body. But have you ever wondered how it is decided which blood group we have in our body? And how are these blood groups named? Let us tell you…

How many types of blood groups are there?

Before we know the process of blood group determination, it is very important to know how many types of blood groups there are. Generally, there are 8 types of blood groups in the human body, which are A+, A-, B+, B-, AB+, AB-, O+, O-. It is important to know here that the blood of a person with Rh positive blood group is never transfused to a person with negative blood group. Doing this can cause many problems in the body.

How is blood group determined?

Whenever we fall ill or get infected, the first thing doctors do is ask us to get a blood test done. Doctors take two drops of blood from our body, test it and tell about the disease. But the question is how is blood group determined? Actually, the blood group of our body is determined by antigens. The red blood cells that blood is made of have a layer of protein on them, which is called antigen or Rh. Rh is either positive or negative. If our blood is type A then it has only A antigens, B blood has only B, blood group AB has both the antigens. After this, O type blood does not contain both the antigens. That is why the type is also called universal donor, because this blood group easily mixes with any other group.
