Lakshadweep is the smallest union territory of India. This state is a beautiful group of 32 islands. However, now there are 36 islands here. The capital of this state is Kavaratti and 96 percent of the population here follows Islam. But, before the arrival of Islam, there were more people of Hindu and Buddhist religions in this state.

When did Islam come here

Islam started in Lakshadweep in 631 It was done by an Arab Sufi Ubaidullah in AD. Whereas, in government documents, the rise of Islam in Lakshadweep is talked about from the 7th century. The biggest reason behind the spread of Islam here is considered to be the acceptance of Islam by one of the kings, Cheraman Perumal. In fact, they had adopted the religion of Islam in 825 AD.

When did Lakshadweep become a Union Territory

After independence in 1947, this state was transformed into a Union Territory in 1956. On the basis of language, it was merged into Madras Presidency. After this it was again included in the state of Kerala. However, things did not work out here either, so in the same year this small state was made a Union Territory. In early times this state was known as Laccadive, Minicoy and Amindivi. But in 1971, this state was named Lakshadweep.
