How does drinking rum keep you warm? You get a feeling of warmth even in winter, know the science behind it

When it comes to New Year, the first thing that comes to mind is ‘party-shorty’. Everyone wants to welcome the New Year by dancing, singing and dancing. Everyone parties, but for ‘shorties’ i.e. liquor lovers, this celebration has a different meaning. You must have noticed that people fond of alcohol often like to drink rum during the cold season. Actually it is said that rum gives heat to the body. But is it really so? Does rum really make one feel warm even in winter and if yes, then how? Let us know.

What is rum?
Rum is a type of liquor (alcoholic drink), which is mainly prepared from sugarcane juice or sugarcane molasses. This liquor is slightly sweet in taste. Rum has been consumed on various festive occasions in many cultures since ancient times. The process of making rum involves fermenting sugarcane juice or molasses with yeast, and then distilling it to extract the alcohol. After this, it is aged for different periods of time, which changes its taste and color. Many types of rum are made from it like silver or white rum, gold rum, dark rum, spiced rum.

This difference in color between white rum and dark rum is due to molasses. While making dark rum, molasses is added separately to the finished rum. Whereas this is not done with white rum. That is why white rum is transparent. Rum is also used in making many cocktails, like Mojito, Daiquiri, Pina Colada etc. It is especially popular in the Caribbean, Latin American and some Asian countries.

Why does drinking rum make you feel hot?
Sanjay Ghosh, founder of Cocktails India YouTube channel, explains that while preparing dark rum, it is processed by adding molasses separately, so that its color becomes darker and the flavor comes out better. For this reason, dark rum contains more calories, due to which it causes heat in the body. Apart from this, when we drink alcohol (like rum), it increases blood flow. Due to this the body temperature increases and we start feeling heat. Another reason is that alcohol is absorbed rapidly in the body, and it affects the temperature control system in the brain. Due to which we feel warmth, even if the actual temperature does not change.

The process of metabolism is also a reason for this. The body requires extra energy (calories) to digest alcohol, which increases the speed of metabolism. In this process also the body temperature increases, due to which heat is felt. This is why people often experience excessive heat and sweating after drinking alcohol.
