There are many rules for traveling by train, such as no inflammable substance can be carried, no smoking, etc. However, do you know about the rules for carrying alcohol in the train? You must be wondering when liquor is served in flights or liquor can be brought in the metro, then what is prohibited in the train.
However, the rules of Indian Railways are different in this matter. Here no means no. Meaning you cannot carry alcohol in any way in the train. If you are accidentally caught while carrying liquor, you may also be punished.
Liquor is prohibited in the train
Carrying or drinking alcohol in the train is strictly prohibited. You also cannot travel with a sealed bottle. If you are found doing this then action can be taken under Section 165 of the Railway Act 1989. Under this Act, a fine of up to Rs 500 can be charged from you or you can also be imprisoned for 6 months. Actually, Railways keeps liquor in the category of inflammable substance. In such a situation, if there is any kind of loss due to alcohol in the train, then the culprit has to bear its expenses.
Different rules for these states
You must have understood that carrying alcohol in the train is a crime. The Excise Department can also take action in this matter. However, in states where liquor is banned, such as Gujarat and Bihar, if you are caught with liquor while travelling, you can face a heavy fine and even go to jail.
Permission is available in special circumstances
There is one more rule. You can take 1.5 liters of liquor with you in the train under special circumstances. However, before this you will have to take permission from the officer of the concerned railway zone. Along with this, the reason will also have to be given that the liquor is being taken for other reasons and not for drinking. Liquor should be in a sealed pack bottle of 1.5 litres.
