According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), by taking the right steps, money sent to the wrong account by mistake can be recovered. For this, RBI says that in case of unintentional transactions through digital services, the victim should first inform the payment app or system from which the transaction was done. You can contact the customer care of UPI apps Paytm, Google Pay and PhonePe if money goes to the wrong account. You can request for refund by calling them.

Along with this, keep in mind that whenever you make a wrong payment, take a screenshot of it. Immediately inform your bank about this transaction. Give the PPBL number to your bank. You will see the PPBL number in the message received after the transaction. Thereafter, you may meet the Branch Manager at the earliest. If the wrong payment has been made due to wrong name, then you will have to provide proof to the bank that the name of the account holder is the same. While complaining to the bank, mail the information as well.

You can complain to the Ombudsman of RBI

If UPI payment apps and banks are unable to help you, then you can contact the Ombudsman of Reserve Bank of India for digital transactions. Due to RBI rules, the ombudsman listens to such complaints of senior official customers. For this, you can also file a complaint on bankingombudsman.rbi.org.
