A report in the Indian Express states that a report published in the American Journal of Psychiatry says that taking a dose of Naltrexone medicine before the urge for alcohol ends the desire to drink alcohol. It is believed in the report that the trial of this medicine has been successful. Half of the participants in the trial were given the drug naltrexone and the rest were given a placebo. After 12 weeks of the trial, it was found that those who took Naltrexone medicine before alcohol craving, did not drink alcohol and if they did drink very little. At the same time, no difference was seen in those taking placebo. The drug Naltrexone stopped the endorphins from being activated in the brain immediately after eating.
What is endorphin?
When someone gets addicted to alcohol, a chemical named endorphin is activated in the brain to get intoxicated, due to this the enthusiasm for intoxication awakens in the person. But, the drug naltrexone blocked the effect of endorphins, which ended the person’s enthusiasm for drinking alcohol.
