Today i.e. 23rd March is the death anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. On this special day, every year on 23 March, people gather in Hussainiwala village located on the India and Pakistan border in the state of Punjab to honor the martyrdom of three heroes of India’s freedom struggle, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru. But do you know that India had given up 12 villages to get this one village in Firozpur district, which had joined Pakistan. At the time of partition, the country had given 12 villages to Pakistan in exchange of one village to honor its martyred brave sons.

Bhagat Singh and his companions Sukhdev and Rajguru were to be hanged on 24 March. But fearing people’s rebellion, the British hanged him 11 hours before the scheduled time. Today i.e. 23rd March is the death anniversary of Bhagat Singh. Let us tell you that on the evening of 23 March 1931, Sardar Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru were hanged in Lahore jail. According to history, the last rites of the three martyrs were to be performed in the jail itself, but later the British felt that the public might get enraged after seeing the smoke rising from the jail, so overnight the back wall of the jail was broken and all three were taken to the jail through a truck. His body was taken out and cremated.

Let us tell you that the British had secretly performed the last rites of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru on the banks of Sutlej river in Hussainiwala village of Firozpur district. According to history, the British did not perform the last rites of our martyrs properly and due to the fear of sunrise, they threw away their mortal remains in the river. But the villagers then performed the last rites of the martyrs in a respectable manner. This site is today a memorial, which is called ‘Prerna Sthal’.

India-Pakistan partition

According to a report, Hussainwala had gone to Pakistan after partition. But the Indian government had given 12 villages to Pakistan. To honor the legacy of the heroes, a Martyr Fair is organized here every year on 23 March. Hussainiwala village shares border with Ganda Singh Wala village of Pakistan. This village was named after a Muslim Pir Hussaini Baba.
