IC 814- The Kandahar Hijack Review: Anubhav Sinha has made a good series based on a true incident

A great web series has been released on Netflix, named ‘IC 814- The Kandahar Hijack’. Before talking about this series, let us tell you that 25 years ago, i.e. in the year 1999, a big incident happened and that incident was the Kandahar plane hijack. Even today, remembering this incident makes us shudder from within. Actually, this incident happened just a day before Christmas Day, when the whole world was immersed in the celebration of New Year and Christmas.

It was on 24 December 1999, when an Indian Airlines plane from Kathmandu, Nepal, flew to Delhi with about 175 people and then it was hijacked and that flight was IC 814. The terrorists took it from Amritsar, Lahore and Dubai to Kandahar and demanded the release of terrorists Maulana Masood Azhar, Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar and Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh lodged in Indian jails. Seven days later, when India released these three terrorists, all the passengers reached home safely. Now a web series ‘IC 814- The Kandahar Hijack’ has been made on this matter.

You have understood the story. By the way, this series is based on the book ‘Flight into Fear’, which has been written by the pilot of this flight, Captain Devi Sharan himself. In the series, director Anubhav Sinha has paid attention to every small and big aspect. In the series, you will get to see everything inside the flight that was happening with everyone present there at that time. There was so much commotion among the passengers sitting inside the flight. What was the condition of the pilot, what were all the crew doing, what was the attitude of the terrorists.

Also, what was the condition of the families of the passengers and what was the condition of the Indian government at the time when this incident happened. Also, questions have been raised on the security system. It has been shown in the series that as soon as the plane landed in Amritsar, the Indian commandos were ready for the operation, despite this how did the terrorists take the plane from there to Lahore? You will also get answers to many questions in the series, such as why was the plane taken to Kandahar? And what was the attitude of the government of Afghanistan during this time?

Now if we talk about the acting in the film, all the stars including Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapoor, Vijay Verma, Patralekha, Divyendu Bhattacharya, Dia Mirza have given their best in this series. Everyone has done justice to their characters. Talking about direction, Anubhav has put all his experience in this series. There are a total of 6 episodes in the series and each episode is very strong. You will get to see a new twist in every episode.

Despite this, there are some shortcomings in the series. The story slows down a bit in between, due to which some scenes start boring you. The story is a bit flat and hence does not give the expected thrill. This is also because it is a story based on a true incident, with which Anubhav did not consider it appropriate to tamper much. Overall, you can watch this series with the whole family. 3 stars for the series from my side.
