Ideas of India Summit 2024: Saturday is the second day of the Idea of India program. Practo co-founder Shashank ND participated in the second day of this special program. Through this special program he told why India was called Diabetes Capital? When famous writer Chetan Bhagat, on behalf of ABP Live India, asked him why India is called the diabetes capital.
For what reasons Indians after 40 are becoming victims of diabetes and hypertension?
Also, for what reasons are people here becoming victims of hypertension and diabetes after 40? Responding to this, Shashank says that the main reason for most people having diabetes here is genetic problem. This is because diabetes is a genetic disease in most families which is passed on from father or mother to their children. For this reason, the number of diabetes patients is increasing day by day.
Shashank further says that people’s eating habits, eco system and not getting tests done on time are also increasing the number of diabetes patients. If people keep getting tested from time to time, then it is possible that this disease can be controlled in time. He also told that ‘Practo’ is continuously working in this direction. And it also provides many online facilities using which people can get their diabetes checked while sitting at their home.
Diabetes is also included among the fastest growing diseases in the world. It has grown very rapidly in the last few decades. The biggest matter of concern is that people of all ages are falling prey to this disease. Talking about statistics, around 500 million or more than 50 crore people across the world are suffering from diabetes. In the next 30 years this number may more than double to 130 crores. Due to diabetes, many other diseases can affect the body. This is why health experts recommend taking special precautions regarding this disease.
Risk factors of diabetes
weight gain
According to health experts, spoiled lifestyle and bad eating habits are the main causes of diabetes. Overweight or obesity also increases the risk of diabetes. Many studies have found that reducing weight can reduce the risks of diabetes. The risk of diabetes can be reduced by increasing physical activities regularly.
being physically inactive
Being physically inactive is also a major cause of pre-diabetes and type-2 diabetes. Increasing physical fitness regularly helps in reducing insulin resistance. This means our body is able to use its own insulin more effectively. By exercising for 30 minutes at least 5 days a week, you can reduce the risk of diabetes and heart disease. Research has found that sitting for a long time can increase the risk of diabetes.
messed up eating
Diet plays the most important role in protecting from diabetes. Eating healthy food in right quantity is considered very good. People who consume excessive amounts of trans fat, cholesterol and sodium i.e. salt, red and processed meat, carbohydrates and sweet food and beverages may have a higher risk of diabetes. Health experts recommend consuming a diet rich in fruits and vegetables along with whole grains, poultry, fish, nuts and seeds.
Alcohol and smoking are your enemies
Alcohol and smoking are considered dangerous for liver and lungs. These are also the main causes of diabetes. Drinking too much alcohol can cause inflammation in the pancreas. Due to this, insulin production is also affected. Alcohol damages the liver. The liver itself is helpful in the production of insulin. Therefore alcohol and smoking should be avoided.
