The Indian Meteorological Department, while issuing an alert for heat wave, says that the method of measuring it is different in different areas. When the temperature reaches 40 degrees Celsius in the plains, the IMD puts it in the category of heat wave. On the other hand, if the temperature in the hilly areas exceeds 30 degrees Celsius, then heat wave is declared. 

What is heat wave color code?

The Indian Meteorological Department and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) have issued a special warning regarding heat wave. Along with the warning, the color code has also been shared. These colour codes tell about heat wave. 

Green

If the temperature is high but not so humid, then there is no need to take special precautionary measures. 

Yellow

This colour means that heat wave conditions will persist for 2 days in some areas. During this time, the health of children, elderly and sick people is adversely affected. Some special precautionary measures need to be taken to avoid heat wave. 

Orange

Heat wave will persist for 4 days. It is advisable to drink as much water as possible and keep yourself hydrated. 

Red Alert

This colour clearly means that heat wave conditions will persist for more than 2 days. There is a risk of brain stroke and heat stroke. Vulnerable people should take special care of these things. 

What is heat wave?

According to WHO, when the normal temperature in an area is 4.5 degrees Celsius higher for two consecutive days, it is called ‘heat wave’. At the same time, when the air temperature is 6.5 degrees Celsius higher than normal, it is placed in the category of dangerous heat wave. During this time, hot air starts piercing the body. 

Why does heave wave occur?

International NGO World Weather Attribution (WWA), which works on ‘climate change’, published a report in the year 2023. This report revealed what is the reason behind so much heat or cold suddenly? The report said that this is human-induced climate change, due to which heat wave is increasing rapidly in India.  According to the scientists of the Indian Meteorological Department, there will be El Niño effect for a few months in the year 2024, which will affect India as well as other countries of the world.
