We are talking about the ‘Magistrate Mithai’ of Sarenja village of Chausa block of Buxar district. As per its name, it is very special in taste as well. This sweet is very popular not only in Buxar but also in the border districts of Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand.
This sweet is made and sold in a hut-like shop located on the Buxar-Kochas main road in Sarenja village. It takes more than 4 hours to prepare this sweet. It is made by boiling milk on a slow flame of wood. The popularity of this sweet is so much that as soon as it is prepared, a crowd of customers starts gathering and the sweet gets sold in no time.
Sweets reached many cities
Shopkeeper Gorakh Kumar Gupta said that his father Rajeshwar Prasad started making this sweet about 40 years ago. Its demand increased with time. When the shop came on the main road, its sales doubled. Earlier this sweet was sold only in nearby villages, but now it has reached many other cities apart from the district.
To make this sweet, 20 kg of milk is heated in a pan on low flame, in which ingredients like sugar and cardamom are added. After boiling the milk on low flame for four hours, about 5 kg of sweet is prepared. Due to its excellent taste, people named this sweet as “Magistrate Mithai”, and this name has now given it recognition.
20 rupees a piece
The popularity of Magistrate Mithai has increased so much that it has now reached other states besides Bihar. New officers coming to Rajpur or Chausa block also express their desire to taste this sweet. This sweet is sold at the rate of Rs 400 per kg, and one piece is sold for Rs 20 in retail.
Since the shop is located on the main road, there is a constant rush of customers, and more than 50 kg of sweets are sold daily. Especially during the wedding season, its demand increases even more.
Magistrate Mithai holds a special place not only because of its special name and taste but also because of the hard work and tradition behind it. This sweet has become a special identity in Buxar and the surrounding areas.
