Which tests can be done to know the real cause of hair fall?
1. Thyroid level
Underactive thyroid causes hypothyroidism and overactive thyroid causes hyperthyroidism. If it is not treated on time, hair fall may occur. The thyroid is responsible for the production of TSH, FT3 and FT4 hormones. In such a situation, blood test shows how much of each hormone is being produced and whether the thyroid is less active or more active.
2. Sex hormones
Sex hormones are very important for hair growth. Women produce testosterone, which is metabolized into DHT and binds to androgen receptors in the hair follicles. Due to this they shrink and stop producing hair. Blood test reveals the level of sex hormones. It contains testosterone, oestradiol, androstenedione, prolactin and FSH lutein hormones. Hormone levels can also indicate conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome, which is commonly thought to cause hair loss.
3. Iron and ferritin levels
Hair fall problem can also occur due to iron deficiency i.e. anemia. It has been reported in many studies that serum ferritin is a blood protein in which iron is found. Its level is lower in women with hair fall compared to women with healthy hair. Alopecia areata can develop rapidly when there is an iron deficiency. In such a situation, hair fall can be detected by testing the iron and ferritin levels in the blood.
4. Whole Blood Count
Complete blood count or CBC measures red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. These may indicate inflammation around the hair follicles. This may also indicate an autoimmune condition, which causes hair fall.
5. Vitamin D level
Vitamin D deficiency can cause auto immunity problems. This is why it can also cause autoimmune hair loss conditions like alopecia areata. According to research by Harvard Health, vitamin D deficiency can be the cause of hair loss.
6. Vitamin B level
Many different vitamins are found in Vitamin B. Many of these have been linked to hair fall. Folate i.e. Vitamin B9 Folate is also known as folic acid. At the same time, deficiency of biotin i.e. Vitamin B7 and Vitamin B12 can also cause hair fall.
7. Blood Sugar
Diabetes can be detected by blood sugar level. Type 2 diabetes has been linked to hair loss. In such a situation, blood sugar test can reveal the cause of hair loss and its correct treatment can be found.
