Imran Khan quotes Arvind Kejriwal: Jailed former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan complained to the Supreme Court about the ill-treatment meted out to him and sought protection from terrorism in India Lok Sabha Elections He cited the example of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal getting bail to campaign in the Lok Sabha. During his appearance on Thursday before a five-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa in a case related to the amendment to the National Accountability Ordinance, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party president complained of being harassed since he was ousted from the post of Prime Minister in April 2022.
Justice Aminuddin Khan, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhel, Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Syed Hassan Azhar Rizvi are also included in the bench. Justice Minallah said that it is unfortunate that Imran Khan is in jail even though he is the head of a big party which has millions of supporters. Imran Khan mentioned that during the general elections in India, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was released on bail by the Supreme Court there so that he could campaign for his party but he (Imran Khan) is facing atrocities in Pakistan where undeclared martial law is imposed.
Imran Khan unhappy with the order of Pakistan Supreme Court
Imran Khan complained that he was convicted within five days to keep him away from Pakistan’s general elections held on February 8. The former Prime Minister of Pakistan also expressed displeasure over the order of Pakistan’s top court, which rejected the request of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to ‘live stream’ the case. Imran Khan told the Chief Justice, “You wrote (in the decision) that I tried to take political advantage during the last hearing. I do not understand what political advantage I took.”
On this, the Chief Justice of Pakistan Supreme Court said that the judge is not obliged to give clarification to anyone on the decision. He said, “You can file a petition for review of the decision.” He asked the former Prime Minister to speak only on pending cases before the court. Imran Khan said that the Supreme Court should appoint a chairman for the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). He said, “When the opposition and the government failed to reach a consensus on a name for the appointment of the chairman of the bureau, then a third person is taking the decision and the anti-corruption organization is working under this person.”
On this, Justice Minallah said, “Khan Sahib, there is no reason to declare the amendments in NAB as illegal.” Imran Khan said that he is facing investigation by NAB and appealed for reform in NAB. He urged the court to compare the facilities given to him in jail with the facilities given to former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. However, Justice Mandokhel said in a lighter vein that Nawaz Sharif is not in jail right now. “Do you want us to send him to jail?” The Chief Justice said that the court will arrange for a surprise visit by the judicial officer.
