This special place is in Himachal Pradesh. Theog is a city about 30 km away from Himachal Pradesh’s capital Shimla. The local people here celebrate Independence Day on 16 August, apart from this, people here also celebrate this day in the form of Rihali and Jalsa. On this day, people here wear new clothes, hug each other and distribute sweets among themselves.
Why do people here do this?
It is said that even though the country got freedom from British rule on 15th August 1947, the first government elected by the people in the country was formed in this city of Shimla. Actually, before 16th August 1947, kings ruled in Theog. But one evening, the people stood up in front of the palace of the kings of Theog Riyasat to revolt. After this, the king of Theog Riyasat left his throne and the first government was formed in Theog on 16th August 1947 under the leadership of Surat Ram Prakash of Prajamandal. This is the reason why the people here got freedom from the British rule on 16th August itself. Independence Day People here also call it Theog festival.

When Raja Karmchand left his throne after the people’s revolt, Surat Ram Prakash of Praja Mandal took oath as PM. Apart from him, Home Minister Buddhiram Verma, Education Minister Sitaram Verma and eight other people took oath as ministers.
