China on UNSC Reforms: China has given its response regarding reforms in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). China has said that the reforms in UNAC should benefit all the member countries instead of serving the interests of some people. This comment of China was made by India’s Foreign Minister S. This comes a few days after Jaishankar’s statement in which he had said that a non-Western country is blocking the UNSC reforms.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said on Thursday that when it comes to UNSC reforms, member states need to achieve the widest possible consensus on a package solution through serious and in-depth consultation.
China is challenging India’s claim
Mao Ning said, “China believes that reform of the Security Council should effectively increase the influence and representation of developing countries. More small and medium-sized countries should get the opportunity to participate in the decision-making of the organization.” Indeed, India has staked its claim for a permanent seat in the expanded UNSC along with Japan, Germany and Brazil.
Four out of the five permanent members of UNSC, i.e. America, Russia, France and Britain have supported India’s candidature in UNSC, while China remains against it. Apart from this, China has repeatedly blocked efforts by the United Nations to list Pakistan-backed terrorists as international terrorists.

Last week, at the Raisina Dialogue, Jaishankar had said that there is a need for radical and immediate change in the global system but the biggest opponent of UNSC reforms is not any western country. He said, “When the United Nations was created, there were about 50 members in it. Today it has four times the number of members. Therefore, it is a common sense proposition that when you have four times the members you cannot continue in the same manner. Let us understand the totality of the problem properly. We have to struggle slowly to form groups for change.”
