Bangladesh Crisis: The Bangladeshi side had earlier this week met with the head of the interim government of Bangladesh Muhammad Yunus and Prime Minister Narendra Modi The two leaders had made a formal request for a meeting between the two, who will be in New York later this month for the UN General Assembly. The chances of a meeting are believed to be low after the recent comments made by Yunus. He said Yunus’ comments did not go down well in New Delhi.
According to a Times of India report, the Indian side is yet to decide on this request. Also, PM Modi’s agenda for bilateral meetings in New York is still being finalised. In fact, in an interview this week, Yunus criticised former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for commenting on developments in Bangladesh while in exile in India. He suggested that Bangladesh could seek his extradition.
Sheikh Hasina’s comments for Bangladesh are not good for India
Along with this, interim government chief Mohammad Yunus said that India should move beyond this “narrative” that every political party other than Hasina’s Awami League is “Islamist”. Yunus said that if India wants to keep Sheikh Hasina with it until Bangladesh calls her back, then the condition will be that it will have to remain silent. Sitting in India, she is speaking and giving instructions. Nobody likes this. This is not good for us or India.
Sheikh Hasina should remain silent in India – Bangladesh
The Bangladeshi side has told India “quite strongly” that Sheikh Hasina should keep quiet as she has been granted asylum there and is campaigning from there. There has been no response from India yet to Yunus’ remarks. However, the people cited above say that such comments are not conducive to better relations.
