MeitY: India has taken a big step towards making its own chips i.e. Made in India chipsets. We are saying this because the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has given the green signal to three semiconductor plants to be built in India. Let us tell you about it in detail.
The first semiconductor plant in India will be in Dholera in Gujarat, the second in Sanand in Gujarat and the third in Morigaon in Assam. On February 29, a post was made through the official X handle of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India, through which some important information about India’s first semiconductor plant was given.
The first semiconductor plant will be in Dholera
Through this post, it was revealed that Tata Electronics and Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) will jointly set up India’s first semiconductor fabrication plant in Dholera, Gujarat. A huge investment of Rs 91,000 crore has been made for this.

In the post shared by the IT Ministry, it has been informed that in this first semiconductor plant of India, chips will be made for sectors like automotive, consumer electronics, data storage, display drivers, power electronics and telecommunications sectors etc.
Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwani Vaishnav, citing the timeline of 3-4 years for the production of semiconductor fab, expressed hope to speed up the process. He talked about the developments made by India in Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) technology. The Union Minister said that “This will reflect India’s emergence in the global semiconductor value chain.”
Investment of Rs 27,000 crore for Assam
Apart from Dholera, the Cabinet has also approved Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Private Limited for setting up a chip assembly and testing unit in Assam, through which an investment of Rs 27,000 crore has been made. Apart from this, CG Power and Japan’s Renesas will jointly set up a semiconductor plant in Sanand, Gujarat, for which it has been decided to invest Rs 7600 crore. It is expected to produce 15 million chips per day.
Let us tell you that apart from these three semiconductor plants, American company Micron has also invested Rs 22,516 crore for a chip assembly plant in India, which strengthens India’s position in global semiconductor manufacturing.
