Tremors were felt in the city of Medan

Different agencies have given different figures regarding the intensity of the earthquake, which is around the magnitude of 6.0. Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) also said that the magnitude of the earthquake was measured at 6.2. The European-Mediterranean Center for Seismology said tremors were felt in the city of Medan to the north-northeast, about 120 km from the epicenter.

Earthquakes occur in Indonesia because of this

Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, where tectonic plates collide. On November 21, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck the populated West Java province on the main Java island, killing 602 people. Most of the victims died due to the collapse of buildings or landslides.

Tsunami was brought by this devastating earthquake

One of the deadliest earthquakes occurred on the island of Sumatra on December 26, 2004, which caused a tsunami in the Indian Ocean. More than 230,000 people had lost their lives in this. Its victims also included people from Sri Lanka, India and Thailand far away from the area. Then there was a powerful 9.1-magnitude earthquake, which caused 30-metre (100-foot) high waves that hit the coast of Banda Aceh, Sumatra.
