Relation of Yoga and Buddhism
In Buddhism, yoga is considered as a way of sadhana to attain salvation. Lord Buddha had said that spiritual peace is attained by meditating in solitude, practicing meditation is sadhana and this sadhana leads to attainment of the path of salvation. Therefore, in Buddhism, yoga is considered as a method of sadhana.
There are many similarities between the principles of Buddhism and Yoga. For example, controlling the body through the practice of yoga and preparing oneself for attaining knowledge. In Buddhism, meditation is given more importance for yoga. Because meditation keeps both the mind and the brain stable.
Along with meditation, importance has also been given to Samyak in Buddhism. Buddha used to say that if the string of the Veena is pulled too much, it breaks. But if it is kept too loose, no sound comes out. Buddha called this middle path as Samyak. Samyak means balanced.
The Eightfold Path of Buddhism
According to Buddhism, yoga is necessary for a balanced lifestyle. According to Buddha, to live a balanced life, the eightfold path has been described in Buddhism, similar to the Ashtanga Yoga of Patanjali, which are as follows – right view, right resolve, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right exercise, right memory and finally right meditation.
