Responding to this post by Sunita Saymagru, Dr. Sylvia Carpagam, Executive Editor of the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics, wrote, ‘Paneer and milk are not vegetarian foods. Paneer and milk are not ‘veg’. These are foods from animals… such as chicken, fish, beef and others, this post of 6 February has been viewed more than 95,000 times so far. Many people supported Karpagam and many have also opposed him.

Many social media users claimed that since no animal is killed to make cheese, milk or other milk products, they are vegetarian. A user wrote the user said, “No one is killed… to eat cheese or milk.”

Another wrote, “Milk products are animal products for which an animal is not killed and hence it is really vegetarian and not Vegan. The task of killing or damaging an animal is in the process of extracting milk, veg means vegetarian. ”
