Israel new army chief: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appointed retired Major General Iyal Jamir as the new Army Chief of Israel on Saturday (1 February). This decision was taken when former Army Chief Bahujee Halevi announced his resignation last month, taking responsibility for Hamas to stop the October 7, 2023 attack.
The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement saying, “Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz have agreed to the appointment of Major General (Race) Iyal Jamir as the next Chief of Staff of this evening (Israeli Army). Please give that Iyal Jamir is a retired Major General, who has served in the Israeli army for 28 years.
Big responsibility on Iyal Jamir’s shoulders
A huge responsibility has been given on the shoulders of Iyal Jamir. He will take over the reins of an army who had been fighting a war with the Iran -backed group Hamas for the last 15 months. Apart from this, two or two hands have to be done with Lebanon. During this time, the Israeli army also faced air strikes launched by Iran, Iraq and Yemen. The army started a large -scale operation at Northern Israeli -occupied West Bank last month and Israeli soldiers have captured parts of Syria from the end of December.
Iyal Jamir has been the military secretary of Netanyahu
According to the Israeli army website, Jamir acted as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Army from 2018 to 2021. He also led the Southern Command once. This is a regional command that is responsible for military operations and defense including the Gaza border. Earlier, he was the military secretary of Netanyahu. In 2022, Bahravi Halevi, who was appointed Chief of Staff, announced his resignation last month, taking responsibility for a large -scale security failure on October 7, 2023, when Gaza’s Hamas -led militants attacked the southern Israeli communities. Halevi congratulated Jamir on Saturday. Halevi will leave the office on 6 March.
