The country’s big telecom companies like Jio, Airtel and Vi have recently demanded from TRAI to make license mandatory for Over the Top (OTT) apps for internet calling and messaging services along with other services. On the other hand, if the demand of these telecom companies is met, then the tension of apps like WhatsApp and Telegram will increase.

Rules made for these

According to telecom companies, the number of OTT service providers has increased rapidly. Due to the lack of any regulations and with the help of broadband internet, these apps have grown rapidly globally. In such a situation, it is necessary to make rules for apps providing messaging and calling services.

According to Airtel, these OTT apps have become options for the primary services of telecom operators such as voice calling and text messaging. On one hand, companies pay a hefty amount for these services, while on the other hand, these apps are providing calling and messaging facilities to users for free.

Opposition to OTT Apps

OTT apps have opposed the demand of telecom companies. While protesting, the apps have said that they are following all the rules of the Information Technology Act and are providing facilities to the users as per the rules. According to a report by Economic Times, telecom companies have demanded changes in the licensing system from TRAI. Along with this, telecom companies have also supported TRAI’s one country one license rule.

What is One Country One License?

Actually, let us tell you that Unified Services Authorization (National) can be the first and big change in telecom licensing. According to the companies, this rule will provide a lot of convenience to the telecom companies. Along with this, the cost of telecom companies can also be reduced. At the same time, telecom companies have demanded from TRAI that apps providing messaging services along with OTT apps should not be allowed lease line.
