Actually Johnny’s father used to work in ‘Hindustan Lever’ company. Sometimes Johnny also used to go to his father’s office with him. Johnny was inclined towards films from the very beginning. In his father’s office, Johnny used to entertain people by mimicking actors. After this people started calling him Johnny Lever.
At the age of 15, he sold pens on the street
Johnny was born in a poor family. He did not even complete his schooling. In the seventh class, he had to leave school due to the circumstances at home. At the age of 15, he used to make a living by selling pens on the streets. He said in one of his interviews, ‘I sold pens for about three-four months. A small friend of mine taught me to sell pens. When I was 15-16 years old, I used to try to imitate the voice of actors and sell pens. Earlier, I used to earn 25 to 30 rupees by selling pens. However, later when I sold pens in the voice of actors, I started earning 250 to 300 rupees.’
Also worked on liquor contract
Apart from this, Johnny had also worked at a liquor shop before coming to Bollywood. After coming from school, he used to work to help the family financially. In one of his interviews, Johnny Lever had said, ‘I used to live in a slum, so after coming from school, I used to work at a liquor shop. Whatever money I used to get, I used to give it for household expenses.’
Used to ask money from uncle for ration
In actress Twinkle Khanna’s show The Icons, Johnny had revealed that, ‘My dad used to drink a lot. He didn’t like the household chores much. We used to ask our uncle for money. So, if we needed money for ration or for the house, we had to take it from uncle. So, I used to feel bad. Why should I go and ask aunty again and again?’
Made Bollywood debut with ‘Dard Ka Rishta’
In the year 1982, Johnny got a chance to tour abroad with veteran actor Amitabh Bachchan. During that time, actor Sunil Dutt noticed Johnny. Sunil Dutt gave Johnny a chance to work in his film ‘Dard Ka Rishta’. After this, Johnny won the hearts of the audience in the 80s and 90s. In his career, the actor has worked in many films like ‘Golmaal Again’, ‘Raja Hindustani’, ‘Entertainment’, ‘Dulhe Raja’, ‘Roop Ki Rani’, ‘Judai’, ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, ‘Nayak’, ‘Aarzoo’, and Khatta Meetha.
