South vs Bollywood: From special effects, Bollywood’s biggest ‘animal villain’ and Surya’s stardom to the growing influence of South cinema, all of them remained in vain. Even the use of all these things in Surya’s Kanguva could not make it the best film of South Cinema this year.
Neither did this film make a place in the hearts of the audience nor did the critics like it. The debate of Bollywood vs South Cinema has reached its peak in the last few years. And this time in this battle of South vs Bollywood, Bollywood again seems to be winning. There are many reasons for this.
These reasons have emerged after seeing the performance of the two big Bollywood films currently running in theaters, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and Singham Again, along with the recently released Kanguva. Know here in which cases South cinema lost to Bollywood.
Bollywood won in opening day collection
Singham Again and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 earned handsomely despite the Diwali clash. The opening of both the films has been fantastic. Ajay Devgan starrer film earned Rs 43.5 crore on the first day while Kartik Aryan’s film earned Rs 35.5 crore on the first day. Surya’s Kanguva was left behind in this matter. The film earned only Rs 24 crore on the first day.
Bollywood also won in opening weekend collection
In terms of opening weekend collection, these three films are currently kept. Both Bollywood films earned more than Rs 100 crore in the first weekend. Today is the second day of Kanguva and looking at the way the film’s earnings have declined, it seems that the film will not be able to touch Rs 100 crore in any way.
South cinema collapses in Hindi belt
Talking about Hindi films, their earning in South is not as much as the earning of many South films among the audience of Hindi belt. As an example of this, you can take films like KGF, KGF 2 and Baahubali, which earned double digits in Hindi on the very first day. But Surya’s film did not even get this benefit. According to Sacknilk, the film earned only Rs 3.5 crore on the first day in Hindi, which seemed to take the film further back.
Even the craze of South cinema did not work
Craze for many South films has been seen among the audience of Hindi belt. In the last two decades, from Bajrangi and Shivaji-The Boss to Robot-Baahubali, South films started appearing in the list of much awaited films in the Hindi belt too. Seeing the wait and buzz of Allu Arjun’s Pushpa 2 in the Hindi belt, it can be clearly said that the craze in the South is increasing.
Despite this, the efforts made to make inroads among the Hindi audience with heavy promotions and events did not work for the makers of Kanguva. The film seems to be falling flat. On the contrary, both the films Singham Again and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 are making good collections even on their 15th day.
South makers’ strategy failed
South makers know that by hiring big Hindi faces to woo the audience from the Hindi belt, the chances of their film running will increase further. Keeping Saif Ali Khan in Devra, Amitabh Bachchan in Vettaiyan, Aishwarya Rai in Robot and Akshay Kumar in 2.0 is part of his strategy. Even the trailer launch of Pushpa 2 will be held in Patna, Bihar this time.
The South makers employed a similar strategy in Kanguva and they included Bollywood’s biggest current villain Bobby Deol in the film. After liking his ferocious role in his previous film Animal, an attempt was made to make him even more ferocious in the film. It was believed that this strategy would work, but the mistakes pointed out by the critics in the film seem to be ruining the film.
On the other hand, both Hindi films Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and Singham Again are moving towards earning Rs 350 crore worldwide.
