Dak Kawad Yatra: In this journey, the Kanwariyas have to keep walking continuously without stopping. The Kanwariyas do not stop or rest anywhere until they fill the Kanwar with Gangajal and perform the Jalabhishek. Therefore, special arrangements are made for them in temples so that they can be taken to the Shivling without stopping.
Khadi Kawad Yatra: In this, the devotees of Lord Shiva walk standing with the Kaanvad and there is also a helper to help them, who walks along with them. When that devotee takes rest, the other helper moves forward carrying the Kaanvad on his shoulder.
Dandi Kawad Yatra: This is considered to be the most difficult among all the Kanwar Yatras. It takes a whole month for the devotee to complete the journey. In this, the Kanwariya has to complete the journey by lying down while doing Dandauti or Dandavat from the banks of Ganga to Shivdham.
Rules of Kanwar Yatra (Kanwar Yatra ke Niyam)
- During the journey, Kanwariyas should stay away from consuming any kind of intoxicating substances. Also, they should not consume non-vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Kanwar Yatra should be done on foot.
- To perform Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva, fill the Kanwad with Gangajal or water from any holy river. It should not be filled with water from pond, well or tap. Touch the Kanwad only after taking bath and stay with the Kanwadia group.
