A slight injury to the heart can prove fatal. At the same time, the doctors of KGMU have given a new life to the patient despite the bar entering his heart. It is claimed that this is the first case in the country of survival of the injured in such a case.

Dr. Vaibhav Jaiswal told that on March 27, rickshaw driver Munnelal, resident of Durgapur in Sultanpur, fell from the bathroom ceiling while cleaning the house and the bar lying below got stuck in his chest. The patient was brought to the district hospital 22 km away by e-rickshaw. Here, after giving painkiller injection and first aid, the doctors referred him to the trauma center. From there, Munnelal was made to lie sideways in the ambulance and was brought to Trauma at 1.30 pm. The injured had a rebar stuck in his chest. X-ray revealed that the bar had passed through, piercing the patient’s heart, due to which the lungs were also injured.

Patient placed on heart lung machine

Pro. Sameer Mishra said that considering the condition of the patient, he was kept on a heart lung machine in a building located on the other side of the road. The heart and lungs continued to move through it. The anesthesia team kept the patient in such a position that breathing continued. The patient’s heart continued to beat and the rods were removed through surgery. After this, the damaged parts of the patient’s heart and lungs were repaired. The surgery took about four hours. The patient had lost a lot of blood, so six units of blood had to be transfused.

Stayed on ventilator for three days

After the surgery, Munnelal was kept on ventilator for three days. The patient came off the ventilator on the fourth day. Then kept in ICU for nine days. He was discharged after his condition became normal. This patient also had to undergo stomach surgery in May 2023.
