‘Kuttavum Shikshayum’ Film Review: Know the real method of police action ‘Kuttavum Shikshayum’

‘Kuttavum Shikshayum’ Movie Review: The image of the police keeps on changing with every new case. Sometimes she gets credit for crushing the movements and sometimes for giving protection to the criminals. The common man who sees or understands the action of the police from a distance, has a great impact on the image of the policemen of the films. Nowadays a little more spice has come because nowadays policemen also like to call themselves Singham. The fact of the matter is that it is difficult to understand the huge responsibility of the police in dealing with law, politics, search for evidence, missing criminals and very limited resources.

It is also difficult to understand that it can be difficult for the police to get to the bottom of the crimes committed due to a conspiracy. The film Kuttavam Sishyam released on Netflix is based on a real story. The police is the hero in this, but the hero is not the police. It is not that if they go out to investigate, they have any forecast of where the criminals will be found on the way. It is also not correct that his third degree stories come true every time. They face many difficulties even till arresting the criminal and taking him to the right lock-up. The film Kuttavam Shikshyam is an untouched aspect of the real action of the police. The film is interesting. It is definitely long and it takes some time to understand the ending but the film is entertaining.

In 2015, a jewelery shop was robbed in Kasaragod, a famous district of Kerala. Its investigation was very difficult because the dacoits were residents of a remote village in Rajasthan and had come to Kasargod to work. Kerala Police had formed a team of 5 members who went to the village to investigate and arrest these criminals. With very limited resources, help from the local police, and after a lot of hard work, the Kerala police, struggling with the language problem, reaches that village in Rajasthan and finds these criminals with great difficulty. Now the second part of the problem begins, to save these criminals the local people and their villagers attack the police. Will this team be able to take out these criminals?

A live depiction of the straight, truthful and difficult action of the police is seen in this film. The story is written by CB Thomas who is himself a policeman and was involved in the case. Sreejith Divakaran and director Rajeev Ravi have done a wonderful job in adapting it as a screenplay. The aim of the film is to show the functioning of the police in the mirror of truth and not in a film way. In this, the hero does not fire bullets, the vehicles do not fly, the entire team of 5 members leaves together in a single Scorpio, the policemen of Kerala sit with an upset stomach after eating Kachori of Rajasthan, the hotel in which the SP of Rajasthan keeps them is a lodge. It doesn’t get better than this, keeping an eye on the caught criminal, even the policeman dozes off.

When the villagers attack the entire police team, the policemen do not cause bloodshed by firing bullets, but leave through the narrow lane and catch their breath only after reaching the police station by running the vehicles. Inspector Sajan Philip (Asif Ali), the main character of the film, at one point in his career had fired at agitators, killing a small boy. Although the seniors of the department and Saajan’s colleagues save him from this case, Saajan struggles with the weight of his mistake throughout his life.

In the performance, apart from Inspector Sajan (Asif Ali), the work of Basheer (Alencier) is very strong. Basheer is about to retire very soon but he realizes that he is a Muslim and he also knows that if his junior commits a mistake, there may be difficulties in Basheer’s retirement. Apart from this, the character he was younger than and he has also done a good job, although all of them were like fillers. The criminals were also very ordinary people, so the focus has not been placed on them.

Very few films have been made on this type of police action and this is also the reason for being bored in this film. There was absolutely no room for drama in director Rajeev Ravi’s plan to show the truth. By the way, Rajiv himself is a very successful cinematographer and his films as a director have been excellent, but this time he has missed the target a bit. I don’t remember much after the film is over. Still the film is like a good document. It should be seen so that people get to see a different type of story telling.
