It is a legal offense to insult a woman’s dignity through social media

A case came up in the Bombay High Court on 21 August. The case was related to insulting the dignity of a woman. Justice AS Gadkari and Neela Gokhale, who were part of the hearing bench, said about the case that ‘words written on social media that can insult the dignity of a woman are a crime under Section 509 of the IPC.’ Where a complainant woman had filed a case against a person under Section 509 of the IPC.

In which the woman had alleged that while living in a society in South Mumbai, a person there had written objectionable and insulting emails against the woman. In which comments were made on the character of the woman. And that person had also sent the email to other people in the society.

Action will be taken under section 509 of IPC

The man appealed to the High Court against this allegation of the woman where he said that under Section 509 of the IPC, action can be taken only if the spoken words hurt the dignity of a woman and not those written in a social media post or an email. On this, the court said about Section 509 of the IPC that whether it is social media or email, if such things are written here which are against the dignity of a woman, then it is a crime as per law.

What could be the punishment?

Let us tell you that under section 509 of IPC, a person can be arrested immediately for sleeping and if the charges against him are proved, then he can be jailed for up to 3 years and may also have to pay a fine.
