The world’s smallest and lightest cat appeared in India
Have you ever heard of a cat that is lighter than a chicken egg? For the first time in the forests of West Bengal, the world’s smallest and lightest cat ‘Rusty-Spotted Cat’ has been seen. It is a very rare species and finding it is nothing short of surprise. Let’s know the whole story about it!
This unique cat seen in the forests of Purulia
This rare cat has been captured in the camera for the first time in the Kotshila forest of Purulia district of West Bengal. This picture was taken by an organization called ‘Human and Environment Alliance League (Heal)’ through a camera trap installed in the forests. Scientists and wildlife lovers are very excited after this discovery.
Another new wild cat species connected in West Bengal
Heal researcher Vasundha Mishra said, “So far only eight types of wild cats were found in West Bengal, but now this ninth species has joined this list.” Jungle is a great shelter for rare creatures.
This cat is the most found in India
Rusty-Spotted Cat is found in only three countries in the world-India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. But among them, it is also seen in India only. Earlier it was seen in states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka and Kerala. Now its presence in West Bengal is considered a new and major discovery.
This cat is so light that it is difficult to believe!
Do you know that Rusty-Spotted Cat is considered the lightest cat in the world? The weight of a newborn rusty-spotted cat is less than a hen egg! Even when it is completely large, it weighs only between 0.9 to 1.6 kg, which is less than a normal domestic cat.
This rare species reached West Bengal from the forests of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh
Heal Secretary Suvrajyoti Chatterjee said that the expert scientist who confirmed this species is Shomita Mukherjee. According to Tiasha Adya, a member of the IUCN Cat Specialist Group, the cat was previously seen in the forests of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. Now its presence in West Bengal helps to solve the puzzle where the rusty-spoted cat is found in India.
