New Army Chief Upendra Dwivedi: Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi will take over as the Chief of the Indian Army from Sunday (30 June 2024). This is going to happen for the first time in Indian military history when two classmates Upendra Dwivedi will be the Chief of the Indian Army and Admiral Dinesh Tripathi will be the Chief of the Indian Navy. Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Tripathi and Army Chief-designate Upendra Dwivedi studied together in the Rewa Sainik School of Madhya Pradesh from the fifth class in the early 1970s.
There was a good bonding between the two since school
The roll numbers of both the officers were also close to each other in school, according to the news agency. Lieutenant General Dwivedi’s roll number was 931 and Admiral Dinesh Tripathi’s was 938. Their bonding was strong from the early days of school and despite being in different armies, they always remained in touch with each other. A defense official said that the strong friendship between officers of this rank in the army keeps the working relationship even stronger.
Defence Ministry spokesperson A Bharat Bhushan Babu said in a tweet, “Two brilliant students are leading their respective services after 50 years. Full credit for this goes to Sainik School, Rewa.” Both Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi and Admiral Dinesh Tripathi were also appointed at the same time in a gap of about two months.
Long experience as Northern Army Commander
Born on 1 July 1964 in Madhya Pradesh, Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi was commissioned into the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles of the Indian Army on 15 December 1984. He has had a long tenure as Northern Army Commander. Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi is an alumnus of the National Defense College and the US Army War College. He has also studied at the Defense Services Staff College, Wellington and the Army War College, Mhow.
