Expansion
The crowd gathered early in the morning in the city on Sunday holiday for Rahul-Priyanka’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra proved that a large number of people like them. The common people also like the way Rahul and Priyanka mingle with the common people. But the local Congressmen are not very happy with sacrificing the prestigious parliamentary seat of Aligarh for the sake of alliance. Especially in a situation when there was more than one capable contender in the party. Local Congressmen also say in hushed tones that at present in Aligarh, there is no unanimous strong face of SP on whom the alliance can bet.
Political pundits believe that people have a lot of attraction towards Rahul-Priyanka. But due to its organizational weakness and lack of capable candidates, the party, showing practical thinking, has compromised on fewer seats in UP. The electoral history of Aligarh seat also confirms that the position of Congress became weaker election after election. In the 2014 elections, Congress candidate Chaudhary Bijendra Singh got only 62674 votes.
In the 2019 elections, he could get only 50880 votes. In 2014, SP candidate Zafar Alam got 228284 votes while BSP candidate Arvind Singh got 227886 votes. In 2019, BSP-SP alliance candidate Ajit Balyan got more than 4.50 lakh votes. But this time BSP will fight separately. But local Congressmen believe that this time there was no such situation in Aligarh. This time, if Congress had given ticket to the right candidate, he could have got decent votes. That is why SP was also seen in large numbers during Rahul’s yatra because SP supremo Akhilesh Yadav was to participate in the Nyaya Yatra on Sunday itself. Many SPs even accompanied Rahul’s journey from Aligarh to Agra.
Expectation: Decision may change, Congress may get seat
Since SP has undoubtedly decided to contest from Aligarh parliamentary seat, some senior people of Congress are still hopeful that SP may leave this seat in favor of Congress. Senior Congress leaders are also in touch with the SP high command in this regard. Congressmen argue that the party has more than one capable contender who can give a good competition to the BJP. Such candidates have prepared the ground by being active in Aligarh for full five years. His image is also good. Even on the scale of popularity, he is no less than the candidate of any other party. Sources say that some Congressmen of the district have also received such indications that they should wait patiently. The high command of both the parties will take a better decision in the interest of the alliance. In such a situation, Congress candidate can also be fielded from here for better candidature.
