During this period, coalition governments were formed in the country. During this period, a government ruled the country for the shortest period. The head of this government was Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Who had to resign due to not getting majority in the House.
Know when the government was formed
Let us tell you that in the year 1996, elections were held in the country for the formation of the 11th Lok Sabha in April-May. When the results came, no party including BJP and Congress got a clear majority. At the same time, BJP had definitely emerged as the largest party by winning 161 seats in the Lok Sabha. This was the first time in history that BJP had won more seats than Congress. Despite this, a crisis had arisen in forming the government. Because even BJP did not have enough MPs to prove its majority in the House. In the 11th Lok Sabha, Congress emerged as the second largest party and got 140 seats. However, he had decided not to form the government with so many MPs.
Let us tell you that this was the period when many Congress leaders had separated even before the elections. Those leaders had formed their own parties. ND Tiwari formed All India Indira Congress (Tiwari), Madhavrao Scindia formed Madhya Pradesh Vikas Congress and GK Moopanar formed Tamil Manila Congress. When the 11th Lok Sabha elections were held, the effect of this division was visible and most of the seats went to the regional parties. Out of total 543 seats, 129 seats were won by regional parties. Congress had to suffer the loss of division in this election.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government fell in 13 days
According to the information, even though 171 registered parties including eight national parties and 30 state level parties had participated in this election. A total of 13,952 candidates had contested the elections. This was the first time that the number of candidates had crossed 10 thousand. Despite this, no one could get a clear majority. After this, the President invited the Bharatiya Janata Party, which became the largest party in the Lok Sabha, to form the government. BJP formed the government under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Atal Bihari Vajpayee took over the post of Prime Minister on 16 May 1996. However, his government fell in just 13 days.
Deve Gowda and Inder Kumar Gujral also took power
After Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Janata Dal leader HD Deve Gowda formed a new government on June 1, 1996 on the strength of the United Front alliance. But he too was able to remain in power only for 18 months. Because on 21 April 1997, Inder Kumar Gujral took oath as Prime Minister. Inder Kumar was the Foreign Minister during the tenure of Deve Gowda. The Congress Party had supported this government from outside, but their government also lasted only for about 11 months. After this, finally mid-term elections had to be held in 1998.
After this, in the 1998 elections, Atal Bihari Vajpayee once again formed the NDA government. This time, AIADM chief Jayalalitha, who was part of the NDA, had withdrawn support from the BJP during the trust vote. Due to which the government fell again. After this, the next year i.e. in 1999, BJP formed the government for the third time under the leadership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee in alliance with 13 parties. Atal Bihari Vajpayee took oath on 13 October 1999. After which his government completed its tenure.
