Lord Buddha Arahata Sariputra Arahata Maudgalayana Relics return to India From Thailand


Lord Buddha Relics: The sacred relics of Lord Buddha, his disciples Arhat Sariputra and Arhat Maudgalayana will be brought to India on Tuesday evening after being displayed at various places in Thailand as part of a 26-day exhibition.

These relics, revered by Buddhist followers around the world, were flown in a special Indian Air Force aircraft on February 22 as a ‘state guest’. A senior official said the remains will be brought to the Palam Air Force base in Delhi and Minister of State for External Affairs and Culture Meenakshi Lekhi will ‘receive the remains at a ceremony’ upon their return home.

Four sacred Piprahwa relics of Lord Buddha and his two disciples are preserved in India. The remains of Lord Buddha are under the protection of the National Museum while the remains of his disciples were sent to Delhi by Madhya Pradesh for display in Thailand. The remains were enshrined for public veneration on 23 February in a specially built pavilion at the Sanam Luang Pavilion in Bangkok.

What did the government say?
The Union Culture Ministry had said that this was the first time that the holy relics of Lord Buddha and his disciples were displayed together. According to the program, these sacred relics were put on display at Ho Kum Luang, Royal Rujapruk, Chiang Mai from March 4-8; Exhibited at Wat Maha Vanaram, Ubon Ratchathani from 9-13 March and Wat Maha That, Oulu, Krabi from 14-18 March.
