Now every year dozens of A-Rated films are released in theaters and OTT platforms. But do you know which is the first Bollywood film which was given ‘A’ certificate by CBFC?
India’s first ‘A’ rated film was released in theaters 75 years ago i.e. in 1950. This film was directed by KB Lal whose name was ‘Hanste Aansoo’. KB Lal had announced to make ‘Laughing Tears’ in 1949. It was supposed to be a family comedy-drama, but CBFC had declared it a film with adult content.
Got A certificate due to double meaning title
Madhubala was in the lead role in ‘Hanste Aansoo’, when the actress was only 16 years old. Along with him, Motilal, Gop and Manorama were also seen playing important roles in the film. When the film went to CBFI for certification, the board gave it an ‘A’ certificate due to the film’s depiction of domestic atrocities and the double meaning title. In this way ‘Hanste Aansoo’ became India’s first ‘A’ rated film.
What was the story of the film?
Talking about the story of ‘Laughing Aansoo’, it was about a girl named Usha, whose husband Kumar physically exploits her. In such a situation, Usha leaves her home and fights for women’s rights on her own. According to that era, making a film on such a topic was a big deal. In the film, Usha works in a factory. In such a situation, many viewers accused the film that it shows women in a wrong way and attacks family values.
